Dissolving the ADAMANT Foundation: Transitioning to a Decentralized Community
Since 2017, ADAMANT has operated as a blockchain-based messenger resistant to surveillance and centralized control. Initially developed by ADAMANT TECH LABS and later managed by the ADAMANT Foundation, the project has reached a stage where it no longer requires a central entity. The Foundation is dissolving, and future development will be driven entirely by the decentralized community.
From Company to Foundation to Community
ADAMANT TECH LABS, established in 2017 by Aleksei Lebedev and colleagues, built the groundwork for ADAMANT Messenger. The genesis block was created on September 2, 2017, introducing a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (dPoS) utility coin (ADM) with a 5-second block time, in-chat cryptocurrency transfers, and built-in wallets. The project avoided venture funding to remain independent of third parties.
The ADAMANT Foundation later took over, advancing decentralization goals. Notable achievements included listing ADM on 13 exchanges, releasing all ADM coins into circulation, expanding ADAMANT apps to Web, Tor, iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux, and developing the Node API, JavaScript Library, and forging pool software. Unique features such as decentralized file sharing via IPFS and blockchain-based OTP 2FA were also introduced.
Dissolution of the Foundation
Dissolving the Foundation reflects ADAMANT’s commitment to decentralization and removes any centralized authority, aligning the project with a Bitcoin-like development model. This transition eliminates managing entities, funding dependencies, and responsible individuals who could be targeted by law enforcement or governments. All development, governance, and decision-making now rest with anonymous, independent community members. Contributors manage GitHub repositories, blockchain nodes, services, and social accounts.
As founder Aleksei Lebedev notes, he has passed everything to community members and now contributes as a line developer. An anonymous contributor known as Akane adds that ADAMANT has reached a stage where it lives without governance.
Community Takes Control
Active contributors now have full access to all GitHub repositories, former Foundation nodes, documentation, services, website hosting, and social accounts. These contributors operate anonymously and independently. Assets have been transferred following a redundancy approach, ensuring multiple members can manage a single account. Distributed blockchain nodes and delegates remain unchanged.
To further incentivize contributors, the former Foundation distributed all remaining ADM coins to active community members and supporters. This could potentially lead to a dilution of the ADM price.
Contributing and Governance
The decentralized future of ADAMANT relies on its community. Contributors can participate by writing code on GitHub, running ADM nodes and decentralized services, building social media communities, donating, or simply using the messenger. Community communication is facilitated through GitHub and Slack, with updates shared on social media.
As an open-source project, anyone can deploy their own ADAMANT apps and run independent community accounts. While anonymous contributors manage the current infrastructure, redundancy ensures continuity of accounts and services.
Risks of a Decentralized Model
If community support dwindles, the project risks obsolescence. There is no longer centralized management, funding, or designated responsible individuals. The future of ADAMANT is entirely in the hands of its users, who have full control to decide its direction and relevance. If the technology proves viable, it has the potential to replace outdated Web2 alternatives.
